Spellman HV Sponsors 2017 CSTL Clean Tech Competition

May 14, 2017

Spellman HV Electronics is honored to be sponsoring the 2017 Center for Science Teaching and Learning (CSTL) Clean Tech Competition. This year’s theme is “Creating a Greener Future”, and challenges high school students from around the world to identify a specific problem associated with “sick” buildings or homes, building materials, problems associated with efficiency, damage mitigation, indoor environmental quality or a related topic of their choosing. The teams, made up of 2-4 students each, and mentored by a Team Leader, will identify a specific problem, explain and analyze in detail, and design a solution that can mitigate the negative impacts set forth by the challenge.

Spellman Clean Tech Competition

According to Dr. Loren Skeist, President of Spellman HV Electronics, “Spellman is honored to partner with CSTL and Stony Brook University on this year’s Clean Tech Competition. Our long-standing commitment to clean technology and sustainability is reflected in the values of this wonderful program which promotes and rewards innovative clean technology product ideas submitted by teams of high school students from around the world. These brilliant minds represent the leaders of the future in this growing and important field and we are proud to sponsor this competition in support of their endeavors”.

Stony Brook University (SBU) will host the finals on July 14th. This is the first time the finalist competition will be “coming home” to Long Island. SBU is home to Nobel laureates, Guggenheim fellows and MacArthur grant winners and is among the top 1 percent of higher education institutions in the world (Center for World University Rankings).

This year’s entries in Clean Tech included 742 students from 330 teams from 26 different countries: Australia, Algeria, Bahamas, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Ethiopia, Fiji, France, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, Panama, Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Tanzania, Trinidad and Tobago, Turkey, United States and Vietnam. The 30 Semifinalists represent 26 nations including Ethiopia, Turkey, the Bahamas, Canada, China, France, the United States, Ireland, South Africa, Malaysia and Mexico.

Ten finalist teams will be chosen to move on to the Finalist competition on July 14th. Monetary prizes are given to each of the ten finalists with $10,000 awarded to the winner, $7,000 to 2nd place, $5,000 to 3rd place and $1,000 to the remaining finalists. Additionally, the winning team has the opportunity to continue their relationship with a professional who will serve as a mentor and advise and assist the team in furthering their work and education.

The CSTL Competition began in 2012. Past themes have included Solar Solutions, Clean Water for All, Pollution Solutions, Feed the World and Making an Impact. For more information on the competition, email: cleantech@cstl.org.

"Encouraging today’s youth to discover unique solutions to worldwide environmental problems like these, combined with the continuing mentorship program are the main reasons we wanted Spellman involved in this program", added Dr. Skeist.
