Shipborne Power Feed Equipment (PFE)

Spellman's shipborne power feed equipment (PFE) is used within shipborne submarine fiber optic cable systems for telecommunications and has been installed on many cable laying ships around the world.

A typical PFE system provides for 20kWatt capability with constant power performance over the range 8kV to 10kV.

A range of PFE's at various output power levels are available, at 13, 16, 20 24 and 40kW. We also manufacture an active dummy load at output levels between 20kW and 40Kw - this can be included as part of the PFE suite.

Typical PFE Specifications:

The control and monitoring functions of the system are normally met by using a custom designed System Management Terminal (SMT) incorporating the Data logging as well as alarms, trips and ramping up and down functions. The system also allows for monitoring on the SMT and the Master SR6 Unit and, when necessary, controlling of the system by a Master Unit thus providing Redundancy within the control.

Shown below is the typical setup of a 20kW P.F.E (PFE20SB). Other specifications / configurations are available, with options of 6kV, 10kV, 12kV and 20kV output voltages. This particular configuration consists of two racks:

Rack 1.

Clamp/Safety Chassis

The reversible Safety/Clamp Chassis is used in all listed configurations. The Safety/Clamp Chassis includes the high voltage back to back protection diodes for both the repeater/cable and the PFE in case of back EMF's and high voltage surges. There is also a high voltage relay that clamps the output voltage to ground via a 33ohm resistor. This relay is operational during an emergency shutdown.

Monitor points are provided on the Clamp Chassis to allow the measurement of Current and the Voltage. The output connector (15kV Lemo) and earth return connection will be mounted on the rear of the Clamp Chassis. A plug-in module is incorporated within the rear panel required for the polarity reversing.

SR6 Convertors

The PFE will use the Spellman High Voltage Electronics SR6 Series of high voltage power supplies to derive the high voltage source and obtain the flexibility required to meet the specification outlined below and provide "Redundancy" of the power convertors. The control and monitoring functions of the system will normally be met by using a custom designed SMT which incorporates data logging as well as the alarms, trips and ramping up and down functions.

The system will also allow for monitoring on the SMT and the Master SR6 Unit and, when necessary, controlling of the system by a Master Unit thus providing Redundancy within the control.

Rack 2.

System Management Terminal(SMT)

The SMT incorporates the features to control the output voltage and current by touch screen controls and monitors output voltage and current using 4½ digital displays. Alarms will be fitted with a mute override facility and there is an Emergency Stop button included on the front panel. In addition to these features there will be very accurate Ramp Up/Down circuitry controlling the voltage at a set rate determined by the operator at rates up to 10,000V per minute. Polarity indication is displayed on the SMT Screen.

The SMT can be fitted within the Power Feed Equipment Rack or run remotely with a remote control cable of up to 80 metres in length.

The facilities available on the SMT comprise the following via touch screen:

  1. HV Switch ON/OFF.
  2. Voltage control from either manual or autoramp controls and Current control from manual control.
  3. Digital meter indication output volts to lvolt definition and output current to 1 mAmp definition. A two stage alarm/trip system giving an audible alarm from the first preset level and a PFE output adjustable trip up to 10% for the second preset level. There is indication of status of trips and alarms as well as adjustment for both line current and line voltage.
  4. Output Voltage polarity indication prior to HV switch ON.
  5. Data Logging
  6. Continuous monitoring of the Power Feed Rack Temperature.
  7. Deviation monitoring of the set levels of both current and voltage on Touch Screen.

Patch Panel

A Patch Panel can be supplied to include 15kV rated Lemo connectors connected to the high voltage output from the SR6's, to either the Dummy Load or the Cable Termination Cubicles. The number of connectors to supply the CTC's can range from 2 to 10 within a standard height Patch Panel. The Ships anode earth is connected directly to the Patch Panel plus a separate system Earth both via Lemo 15kV connectors. Jumper leads are supplied and allow interconnection as required.

To be included in the PFE suite when required. Used to cope with different 3 phase supply voltages and the 220V AC requirement of the SR6's. The auto transformer has selectable primary tappings of 380 / 415 / 440v (or as required by customer specification) and is situated within its own cabinet.

Fitted at the rear of the cabinet is the circuit breaker for the AC Supplies to the PFE racks. Single phase is derived from the Autotransformer to supply the System Control Unit and the Dummy load, fans and Clamp Chassis.

Detailed Specifications:

Output Levels

The following table shows the levels of output current for the number of SR6 units and output voltage. These are some of the operating configurations(based on 20kWatts) of the system ensuring operation at 1.6Amps:

  1. SMT. Control: 0-10kV @ 2.00A S.C.U. , 1 Master, 2 Slaves
  2. SMT. Control: 0-8kV @ 1.65A S.C.U., 1 Master, 1 Slave
  3. Master Control: 0-10kV @ 2.00A 1 Master, 2 Slaves
  4. Master Control: 0-8kV @ 1.65A 1 Master, 1 Slaves

Cable Termination Cabinets

The purpose of the CTC is to safely accommodate half joints and bare cables ends for installation and repair operations. It is designed to enable output cable to enter the CTC from either the left hand or right hand side. The type to be used:

CTC12/377 To accommodate half joints and bare cables and to connect the power from the PFE within the cubicle and to take the fibres of the cable through to the Optical-Fibre Test Lead room where the cables' fibres can be spliced to the optical-fibre test leads. This will enable the splices to be remade or investigated without having to remove the system power.
