WEEE and RoHS Policy Statement | Spellman Environmental Policy UK Environmental Policy
Spellman High Voltage Electronics update on the WEEE and RoHS directives.
The WEEE and RoHS directives.
The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) are European Union (EU) directives that have to be adopted by member states.
The current understanding after seeking advice from appropriate bodies and guidance notes is that as Spellman HV Electronics does not "put product on the market" within the scope of the directives it does not fall within their requirements.
The directives scope in Annex 1A includes:-
- Large household appliances.
- Small household appliances.
- IT and telecommunication equipment.
- Consumer equipment.
- Lighting equipment.
- Electrical and electronic tools (with exception of large- scale stationary industrial tools)
- Toys, leisure and sports equipment.
- ** Medical devices (with exception of all implant and infected products)
- ** Monitoring and control instruments.
- Automatic dispensers.
Note: ** Currently exempt from RoHS but included in WEEE.
It is also Spellman's understanding that it is only the WEEE producers who "put product on the market" who are required to identify their product with the wheeled bin label referred to in
ANNEX IV of the directive
Spellman's position on WEEE and RoHS.
Although within the WEEE directive product disposal resides with the producers who "put product on the market" Spellman HV Electronics will provide its customers, on request, information of substances referred to in ANNEX II to support the directive.
Capability for producing ROHS compliant products has been achieved. ROHS compliant product can be designed by customer request.
Being a responsible company and in line with its Environmental policy Spellman is actively working towards the intent of RoHS.

June 2008
Spellman High Voltage Electronics is committed to design and manufacture products that comply with environmental laws and regulations in all parts of the world. These regulations include the European Union Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) and Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) regulations.
In order to comply with these regulations Spellman High Voltage Electronics has an active plan to produce compliant products. The following actions are in progress:
- Communication with suppliers: Questionnaires were distributed to suppliers regarding requirements for elimination of banned materials and identification of compliant parts and materials. Data from responses is being compiled into a database and analyzed.
- Lead free solder technology: Lead free reflow oven and wave solder equipment is in operation. Lead free SMT and thru hole PCB assemblies are under continuous evaluation. Lead free hand solder technology has been introduced to Production and is under constant evaluation.
- Elimination of Hexavalent Chromium: A hexavalent chromium free metal coating was introduced in 2006. Currently, all metal parts are manufactured hexavalent chromium free.
- Product end use process development: Design requirements for ease of disassembly have been identified. Metal and PCB recycling processes have been identified. Packaging recycling practices are in effect.
We are actively working with our suppliers, industry experts, and regulatory agency representatives to stay current with developing RoHS and WEEE regulations and directives.
